What are my options?

There are many contact lens options available. Your eye care provider will take your lifestyle and vision correction needs into consideration when helping you select the right lenses for your eyes.

Here are some of the most common contact lens types:

• Soft Contact Lenses – Soft contact lenses are popular because they are very comfortable for the wearer. They come in a variety of modalities: daily, bi-weekly, or monthly:
  • Spherical: This type of contact lens is designed specifically for those with distance or near prescriptions. 
  • Toric: These are designed for those with a need for astigmatism correction. 
  • Multifocal: Multifocal contacts are designed for those who have a need for presbyopic correction.
  • Toric Multifocal: This is a more specialized design of soft contact lens that is used when a patient needs a more customized prescription. These provide correction for distance, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
• Hard Contact Lenses – Hard contact lenses are typically used for patients that need a more customized contact lens. They are hard, or rigid gas permeable (RGP), and more durable than soft contact lenses. They also require a more in-depth cleaning process than soft contact lenses. 
• Specialty Contact Lenses – These contact lenses are used only when necessary for a patient’s health. There are several different types of specialty contact lenses:
  • Scleral Contact Lenses
    • Sclerals are large diameter rigid contact lenses that rest on the sclera and create a tear-filled vault over the cornea. They are used for patients with corneal irregularities, such as keratoconus or severe dry eye. 
  • Hybrid Contact Lenses
    • Hybrid lenses combine a rigid gas permeable “hard” center with a soft skirt. They give you the clear vision of an RGP lens and the comfort of a soft lens.
